Staying at the Casino Royale in Las Vegas

I recently had several friends coming to Las Vegas for a convention and even though I live in Las Vegas they wanted me to come stay on the Strip with them so we could hang out and do some gambling, drinking, and partying like the old days. They informed me they where staying at the Venetian, so I went online to check the room rates and they were starting at $200 a night. Most people who know me claim I am cheap, I prefer frugal, I am always looking for the best value, so $200 a night was out of the question when I live fifteen minutes from the strip.

Of course staying on the strip would be very convenient, so I decided to see if I could find a better deal. I found the Casino Royale that is right in the middle of the Venetian and Harrah’s Casino, less than a five minute walk to the Venetian. More importantly their room rates for the middle of the week where only $29 a night. I booked a room with a king size bed as fast as my fingers could type in my credit card number!

I checked into my room on a Wednesday, check in was pretty smooth, and I realized this was a budget hotel. I’m not even sure they have bellhops, I only had one bag so I didn’t even look for one. After getting my room key and heading upstairs I was pleasantly surprised by how nice my room was. The king size bed was firm with big fluffy pillows, there was an in room safe, a refrigerator, and what looked like a 37″ flat screen TV. The rooms apparently where recently remodeled and it showed. In the bathroom there was a bar of soap, a bottle of shampoo and conditioner, hairdryer, plenty of towels, and housekeeping was excellent.

The only draw back to the room is that the area to hang up your clothes and the bathroom were small, but functional, it would be hard for two people to navigate. One good thing for me was that all the rooms at the Casino Royale are non-smoking.

The Casino Royale has several places to eat on site, starting with an Outback Steakhouse, which is great by the way. They also have a Denny’s, Subway, and a Ben and Jerry’s. A Noble Roman’s fast food pizza is also located on site, which to be honest is horrible, everything else was great, but avoid the pizza place.

If you like Margaritas or Michelob beer, you are in the right place. The bar in the middle of the casino offers $1.00 frozen lime or strawberry margaritas. Also offered are $1.00 Michelob and Michelob Lite beers, and they sell a lot of both. If neither sounds appealing to you they also offer drinks from the well for only $1.50, that make this the cheapest place to drink on the strip if you are not gambling.

One word of advice, this is a small hotel and very close to the strip so if you can request a room on the north side of the hotel it will be quieter. Over all my stay in the Hotel was very good, and a great value and I would definitely recommend it to others and have no problem staying there again.

James Bond – Casino Royale – Reviewed

The latest installment in the popular James Bond series – Casino Royale – stars Daniel Craig as James Bond. Despite some initial criticism of a blond Bond, Daniel Craig brings new intensity to the role. The opening sequence in particular is so full of energy and life that any worries of Daniel Craig living up to the Bond name is quickly dispelled. That along with his piecing blue eyes make him a perfect successor to the Bond Legacy.

The movie itself is based on Ian Flemings first Bond novel and one can feel that the story line was still yet to find the classic Bond feel. The storyline is a lot deeper than most Bond flicks with bad guys behind bad guys behind bad guys, giving greater depth to the villains and creating many levels in front of the true evil which lurks behind.

Whilst their is new depth to the storyline the problem is it is not what the average Bond fan expects with perhaps too many subplots. Also missing are the gadgets which makes the film seem less Bond.

In an interesting scene Bond comes out of the water (almost as a tribute back to previous Bond films with the ladies coming out of the water – perhaps a highlight on the fact that Men too can be attractive in their own right). There is of course plenty of eye candy for both male and female viewers.

The main scene revolves around Bond playing no limit hold em poker – gone is the classic game of baccarat that most people wouldn’t have a clue how to play and in its place the hugely popular no limit poker game.

The cinematography is at a higher level than previous Bond films. My only criticism of the film is the plot is over complicated, perhaps that is to allow for a sequel to further develop the plot. The film seems to try to take in too many different locations, sub-plots and leaves unanswered questions.

The film also tries to develops Bonds character into a genius in regards to computer technology – almost making him a computer geek in fact, perhaps in acknowledgment to the importance of computer technology in the modern world. It doesn’t make up for the missing gadgets.

In conclusion – a great Bond Film on the surface, but lacking the heart to make it perfect.

Movie Review – Casino Royale (2006), Part 1

Evil genius Le Chiffre is trying to fund his international terror network by making a windfall profit through short trading the stocks of an important airliner. For him to profit, the airliner must experience a disaster.

But when Bond prevents that from taking place, Le Chiffre kicks his Plan B into action – skimming off $150 million at the poker table. Place: “Casino Royale,” Montenegro.

Despite an initial setback, Bond ends up spoiling that plot as well with the aid of the gorgeous Eva Green playing Vesper Lynd, the MI6’s chief accountant. That’s basically what the Plot A is all about.

Plot B, the sub-plot, is about the romance between Bond and Vesper. And yes, James Bond really falls heads over heels in love in this one! Sacrebleu! Do I need to say anything else to describe what kind of a “very different” Bond movie this is?

Daniel Craig as James Bond is good but very different in this latest addition to the long-standing string of Bond movies which depicts a young Bond earning his “00″ status. This is a prequel to everything that comes after it. We are watching Bond coming into his own by proving his metal to a skeptical M.

Partly, the times we are living through is responsible for the very different tone of this prequel. Daniel Craig spending a good part of the movie in shirts soaked in blood should give you an idea about the scale of realistic violence in this movie.

(To continue in Part 2.)
